“Bolts & Stitches”, was/is a two-person exhibition with Peggy Blei Hracho, Textile Artist.
Peggy and I keep separate studios in the home that we share, often working simultaneously and listening to the sounds of each other’s processes through the floorboards that separate us.
Peggy’s work with cloth and stitch employs the sewing machine as both a construction tool and a drawing tool. Depictions of women are central in her narrative series dealing with themes of memory, personal history, and portraiture. The female identity and the political climate permeate her work through recurring motifs such as flowers, the color pink, and dresses.
While, at first glance, our work work might appear to be wildly different from each other’s, the many parallels between our practices become evident upon closer inspection. Each of us obsessively pieces together objects from a variety of new and repurposed materials. Each of the resulting works is constructed with a density of details that reward the viewer the more intimately they inspect the art.
We propose Bolts & Stitches as a two-person exhibition that could easily incorporate more than a dozen of Peggy’s wall hangings surrounding several of Gene’s three-dimensional works. If, however, interest is in curating Peggy and/or Gene to exhibit a much more limited selection from both or either of our portfolios, we welcome the opportunity.
